Bud Rot

A high-risk flower disease where dense tissue can brown, collapse, and develop gray fungal growth from the inside out.

Symptoms

  • Brown or gray tissue inside dense flowers
  • Musty odor or soft collapse
  • Gray fuzz in advanced cases
  • Rapid spread in humid flower clusters

Lookalikes

  • Bruising or handling damage
  • Natural late-flower color change
  • Drying-room contamination
  • Nutrient-related discoloration

Quick triage

  1. Open the suspect flower gently and inspect the interior.
  2. Compare the inside of the affected flower against a healthy flower from the same plant.
  3. Check whether browning is spreading over days instead of staying localized.
  4. Avoid relying on surface color alone.

Prevention checklist

  • Improve airflow through dense flower sites.
  • Avoid prolonged high humidity around late flower and drying stages.
  • Remove dead or wet plant material promptly.
  • Photograph close-up, mid-range, and whole-plant context before changing conditions.
