Pest Damage

Visible feeding marks, webbing, residue, leaf distortion, or insects that can be labeled for research and education.

Symptoms

  • Stippling, scraping, or bite marks
  • Webbing or black fecal dots
  • Visible insects or eggs
  • Distorted new growth

Lookalikes

  • Nutrient spotting
  • Wind or fan damage
  • Spray residue
  • Mechanical abrasion

Quick triage

  1. Inspect undersides of leaves first.
  2. Look for moving insects, eggs, webbing, or black fecal dots.
  3. Photograph the pest and the plant context separately.
  4. Do not label all pale stippling as mite damage without checking for insects.

Prevention checklist

  • Scout the underside of leaves regularly.
  • Quarantine new plant material when possible.
  • Document whether damage is localized or spreading.
  • Capture macro and whole-plant images together.
